Sidebar Twitter

I really like Twitter, and use it a lot. Although I only have roughly 25 followers and follows, it’s fun to take a break and check out if for example “Uncle Bob” has anything new on his mind. I know there are a bunch of programs out there that tries to make Twitter even easier, but the way I see it, it tends to make it more complicated (only program I’ve been fairly happy with, is Beak for Mac). If Firefox is your browser of choice, it has some fairly good extensions like Twitterbar, but if you want a lean browser, you have to keep the number of installed extensions to a minimum. So, is it possible to integrate Firefox with twitter without installing any add-ons?

Yes it is! The best way to use Twitter in Firefox, in my humble opinion, is to rediscover an old forgotten gem: The sidebar. Netscape 6 (which is the “father” of Firefox) had this nifty feature, which in reality only is a web page that is displayed in a column on the left side of the browser window. Since Firefox is one of Netscape’s siblings, it still has this feature. In addition to the sidebar we need the mobile version of Twitter, which works on small mobile screens. So here is the recipe for today’s trick:

  1. Go to http://m.twitter.com
  2. Press the Bookmark menu, and select “Bookmark this page”
  3. Call the bookmark Twitter or something
  4. Right-click on your bookmark, and select “Properties”
  5. Check the “Load this bookmark in the sidebar” checkbox.

You may now click on this bookmark, and have Twitter located in the left part of the browser window. Nifty!

PS: If you don’t get the mobile page of Twitter: scroll down, and click on the link “View Twitter in: Mobile”.

Update: Or you can simply click her to add Twitter to your sidebar!

Great post! But can I call the bookmark something else then “Twitter” or “something”? I want to call it “Twitter sidebar”

Not sure if that won’t pass the side-line!
